Scientist/Sr. Scientist - Phycology/Algal Physiologist (2004-35PR)
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global energy and environmental challenges. We are applying synthetic and natural biological approaches to unlock the potential of microbial and plant resources for the biological production of renewable energy and the creation of solutions that will help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. We are currently seeking a Scientist/Sr. Scientist to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in the Greater Area of Houston.
Responsibilities:
- The Scientist/Sr. Scientist will be responsible for directing and reviewing experiments on microalgal green crude productivity at our field station in the Greater Houston area
- The scientist will provide specific expertise in mass culture of microalgae to a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers
- In collaboration with senior leaders, this individual will participate in defining and implementing research plans to accomplish targets for determined preset time lines
- Provide a current and comprehensive knowledge of microalgal mass culture
- Provide expertise on microalgal physiology and productivity and on the responses of microalgae to environmental parameters such as temperature, pH, O2, CO2, nutrients, irradiance and turbulence
- Conduct research that will contribute to a commercially-viable process for algal bio-oil production
- Present data-supported conclusions in writing and oral presentations; maintain detailed and complete laboratory notebooks, as well as participate in the preparation and follow through of intellectual property filings
- Maintain a culture of safety in the laboratories and scale-up facilities
- Comply with Synthetic Genomics company policies and adhere to Federal, State, USDA, and EPA laws and regulations
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Phycology, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Biology, or related field and 3-12 yrs relevant postdoctoral experience
- Outdoor microalgal cultivation experience
- Clear understanding of the effects of environmental factors (temperature, pH, O2, CO2, nutrients, irradiance, turbulence) on algal physiology and productivity
- Clear understanding of elemental mass balance in outdoor microalgal cultures
- Must be able to formulate a research plan to further the program goals in collaboration with other scientists as part of a multidisciplinary research team
- Proven record of productivity in research is required and clear examples of success in team enterprise(s) strongly valued
- Must be willing to relocate to the Greater Houston area
