Field Process Engineer (2004-8PR)
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global energy and environmental challenges. We are applying synthetic and natural biological approaches to unlock the potential of microbial and plant resources for the biological production of renewable energy and the creation of solutions that will help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. We are currently seeking a Field Process Engineer to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in the Greater Area of Houston.
Responsibilities:
- The engineer will be responsible for overseeing and reviewing experimental engineering and processing aspects of green crude production from microalgae at the field station located in the Greater Houston area
- The engineer will provide expertise to a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists.
- In collaboration with senior leaders, this individual will define and implement research plans to accomplish targets on set time lines
- Provide comprehensive knowledge on microalgal mass culturing systems (open raceways and enclosed photobioreactors) and downstream processing technologies which will contribute to harvests, water recycling, reduction of water content, etc.
- Conduct research contributions to a commercially-viable process for algal bio-oil production
- Present data conclusions to support development within the current Production R&D program; maintain detailed and complete laboratory notebooks, and participate in the preparation and follow through of intellectual property filings
- Maintain a culture of safety in the laboratories and scale-up facilities
- Comply with Synthetic Genomics company policies and adhere to Federal, State, USDA, and EPA laws and regulations
Qualifications:
- Requires a MS (5+ years industry experience) or PhD(1-5+ years related experience) in Bioengineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, System Engineering
- Equivalent education and experience may be considered
- Experience in outdoor algal production systems (preferred) or fermentation
- Experience with downstream processing techniques, algal biomass experience preferred
- Experience with computer-based monitoring and control systems
- Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers
Preferred:
Working experience with the following:
- Fluid dynamics
- Process engineering
- Cell recovery
- A detailed understanding of mass production systems for the growth of photosynthetic microbes (algae and/or cyanobacteria) is highly desirable
- Practical experience with integrated system design and cost analysis is desirable
