Scientist/Sr. Scientist - Strain Development (2020-3JF)
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Scientist/Sr. Scientist to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.
Responsibilities:
- The scientist/sr. scientist will lead and conduct research on the isolation, screening and selection of superior strains of photosynthetic microbes for the production nutrient rich by-products
- In collaboration with senior leaders the scientist/sr. scientist will participate in defining and implementing research plans to accomplish program targets
- Conduct research for a commercially-viable algal foods nutrition program
- Utilize metabolic engineering and synthetic biology to generate new and improved microbial production systems through conceptualization, design and implementation of modifications to host microbe pathways to achieve improved productivity, product yield and other commercially relevant attributes
- Present data-supported conclusions in written and oral reports. Generate detailed and complete laboratory notebooks, and participate in presentations and prosecution of filings for intellectual property to lead research
- Develops, maintains and protects intellectual property; assists legal staff in filing patent applications
- Participates in the generation, review and/or approval of internal and external documents and presentations
- Supervises and guides the research activities and professional development of direct reports
- Ensures staff compliance with all safety policies and practices
Qualifications:
- Requires a PhD in Molecular Biology, Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Biology, or related field and 3-7 yrs relevant postdoctoral experience
- Requires extensive knowledge and direct experience with metabolic and pathway engineering of microbial host strains, and demonstrated track record of developing meaningfully improved microorganisms for production of biochemical's
- Significant experience with heterotrophic or photosynthetic microbes, isolating, identifying, culturing, maintaining, and evaluating growth characteristics of microalgae and/or cyanobacteria is required
- Knowledge of mutagenesis, selection, and screening for superior phenotypes is highly desirable
- Data collection on natural strains and cultivation for further analysis of potential commercially viable products
