Sr. Research Associate (2020-4JF)
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Sr. Research Associate to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.
Responsibilities:
- The Sr. Research Associate will work on the development of genes and the development of superior strains of photosynthetic microbes for the production of commercially viable nutrition products
- Collaborate jointly with scientists to develop improved strains for production of food ingredients through directed metabolic engineering methods
- Analysis of sequence data for genotyping of strains
- Conduct research for a commercially-viable algae foods nutrition program
- Document experimental results in a well-kept notebook and reports
- Strong work ethic with the ability to work well in a team environment of a small group
- Strong written & verbal communication skills including the ability to evaluate and convey results in small and large group settings
Qualifications:
- Requires a BS in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Biology or related field and a minimum 5-8 years of experience or MS with at least 2-5 years of relevant work experience
- Molecular Biology (including DNA isolation, PCR, gene cloning, vector construction, and gene expression analysis)
- Biochemistry (including enzyme assays and characterization)
- Microbiology (including microbial strain isolation and characterization, and/or sequence-based taxonomic identification)
- Bioengineering (including optimization of microbial production and product recovery systems)
- Experience working with heterotrophic or photosynthetic microbes is highly desired
- Data collection on natural strains and cultivation for further analysis of potential commercially viable products
